Biography

Coral LuLu was born in Cangzhou, Hebei Province to a military family, and took art classes throughout schools and at Inner Mongolia Normal University in Hohhot. Not until she began working in Beijing 798 Art District was she exposed to contemporary art through many international artists whom she came to know. Contemporary art is a recent phenomenon in China, and when she was younger; being a curator or artist was inconceivable. Working in the Art District gave LuLu opportunities to support exhibitions and eventually curate them herself.

LuLu launched Coral Contemporary Art Gallery online to represent Chinese artists in 2010, and went on to found and direct the DongDong & LuLu Artist Residency, a related charity project, and the International Association of Ethnic Minority Artist Residencies. From 2014-2017, she studied English at Hunter College in Manhattan while building connections among artists in New York City.

LuLu has turned increasingly to her own studio practice, while continuing to curate a series of contemporary exhibitions influenced by indigenous culture entitled Transcending Territories, and has spent the last two years renovating space in Beijing  Songzhuang Art Village for her own studio, as well as creating a center for artist residencies, charity workshops, arts gatherings, and business meetings.
